People are concerned about not being able to acquire
the leadership skills and experiences needed for their careers.
But guess what? SWO-STC can help you emerge as a leader! When I
think about emerging as a leader, I naturally think about Thea Teich.
Thea, an SWO-STC chapter member, is STC’s current President.
Talk about emerging as a leader!
Pam Ecker originally told Thea about
STC in 1988 at a Cincinnati Editors Association meeting. When Pam
was SWO-STC president, Thea volunteered to be the competitions manager.
After serving in that capacity for three years, she ran for SWO-STC
Vice President and then became President. “All past presidents
of chapters are potential Society-level director-sponsors, and Nancy
Hoffman, who was then Region 4 DS approached me, as we had met at
STC conferences,” says Thea. The rest, as they say, is history.”
She also notes that “handling STC programs and leadership
duties is an education in management, as well.” Thea has had
the opportunity to hone her leadership skills from volunteering
as competitions manager to serving as Vice President and President
at the local level to becoming the Region 4 director-sponsor to
STC President.

Leadership
is a big part of any chapter and, as Thea illustrates, a variety
of volunteer opportunities exist to help you develop your leadership
skills. It’s a great way to network, gain visibility in the
Society and the industry, and be recognized and appreciated for
your work. When you volunteer with SWO-STC, you will have plenty
of opportunities to gain invaluable leadership skills such as decision-making,
planning, organization, collaboration, team building, and public
speaking. And, you don't have to run for an elected position to
gain leadership skills. Volunteer to serve on a program or membership
committee and learn from the committee team leads. Any time you
work with a team, or as part of an organization, you’re learning
something about leadership.
Where else can you get this kind of experience and have fun doing
it? We all have the ability to be effective leaders and SWO-STC
can help you emerge as one! To find out more about volunteer opportunities,
