We all have goals in life – some may be easier to reach than others. STC helps you realize your professional goals through a variety of programs, networking, volunteer and educational opportunities, and publications.

Ask any member who has been involved on a local or international level. They will most likely tell you how STC has helped build an irreplaceable network of peers, exposed him/her to technologies they don’t use in their daily jobs, and broadened his/her view of technical communication. Specifically, STC provides the following to help you realize your goals:

Connections
Make the connection with others and feel a part of something bigger. Become clear on the value you add to your profession and learn from others.

Programs
Monthly program meetings provide a way to network with other technical communicators while also helping you enhance your skills and stay up-to-date with industry trends. The topic may be knowledge management or the fine art of balancing your work life with your personal life. Regardless of the topic, you are certain to leave with a new appreciation for what was presented.

Resources
STC provides a wide range of publications that help you stay on top of the field. This includes Intercom, Technical Communication, Between the Lines, local and international web sites, numerous listservs, and SIG’s. Get the idea?

Support
Perhaps most importantly, your involvement with STC means you’re never alone. Even if you’re a lone writer, you know there is a group of other technical communicators who are willing to help you. You can join online listservs or go to monthly program meetings to share your ideas. Contact with other professionals helps you find solutions to writing, design, software, and other problems.

Why not take a few minutes to reflect on the ways that STC helps you realize your goals? It’s not always easy to find the time to attend a program meeting or help out on a committee. However, I urge you to take the time and let STC help you realize your goals. As always, feel free to email me at president@stc-swo.org or call me at (513) 754-1655 to share your ideas and ENERGY!
